Carving Wood - What Carving Tools You Need to Get Started

Carving wood is a beloved hobby of many. Not only is it a wonderful creative outlet, but it is also a very functional hobby as you can create gifts for yourself and your loved ones. If you are interested in getting started carving wood there are certain carving tools you need to equip yourself with. Although there is a long list of tools to choose from, there are a few that you should start your collection with.

Gouges are ideal for adding fine details to work. These are medium sized and have a flat edge. The skew chisels have more of an angled edge as they are used for getting into tight corners of woodwork. You also want to include some micro knives in your starting collection. These are used for scraping and indenting and are used like regular knives only you hold them like a pencil. This allows for more control and precision which is what you need when working on small pieces of wood. For intricate wood carving these are the best tools to get.

Sharpening Tools

One idea is to get a wood carving kit. This kit includes all the basic wood carving tools you need to get started. It is a quick and affordable way of getting the basic tools and then you can upgrade from there and add more pieces to your collection as you get more practice at it. There are beginner carving tool sets as well as those for the more advanced wood carvers.

There are even micro carving tools which are miniature sized and perfect for making small incisions in wood. These are used for fine detail and barely fit in the palm of your hand, just enough to get a firm grip. Wood carving is a lot of fun but you need to make sure you have all the right tools for the job first.
